Judges 19-21; Acts 2

by Kelli Smith Simpkins

“Peter replied, ‘Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.” Acts 2:38

Boy, did the Israelites get a wakeup call in this chapter, or what?! When Peter pointed to scripture to show them how they had crucified the Messiah they had been waiting for, they immediately wanted to know what they needed to do to fix it. Of course, there was no undoing what had happened. They could now only move forward with God’s plan.

Everything that had happened was in God’s control. He was not surprised by the actions of those in charge. He knew the Israelites would not recognize Jesus as their savior, so He turned their grave error into an opportunity for forgiveness because His forgiveness is literally the only way we can be saved.

To quote the poet Alexander Pope, “To err is human, to forgive divine.” What opportunities for divine forgiveness have you experienced in your life? How have you seen God steer you away from shame and toward the peace of the Holy Spirit?
