Exodus 10-12; Ephesians 2

By Becky Hill Martin

Ephesians 2:10 For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things He planned for us long ago.

If you were a masterpiece, which one would you be? Da Vinci’s Mona Lisa, mysterious and iconic? Van Gogh’s Irises, vibrant and tall? Wood’s American Gothic, resilient and strong? Until recently, I saw myself as Renoir’s Dance at Bougival, fun and energetic. But lately, certain life events have left me feeling more like Whistler’s Mother or one of Basquiat’s “invisible” paintings you can only see under blacklight. Since they don’t warn you about this, sis, I will: when you get to a (gulp) certain age, the struggle to be seen, heard, and valued in this world is so real.

When I read Ephesians 2:10, I got the kick in the pants I needed! My worth isn’t determined by worldly standards for my appearance, talent or brains. Good thing, too, because all my ladies over 40 would disappear under a Harry Potter-like Cloak of Invisibility. My worth is determined by the Almighty Himself. He sees me. He hears me. He values me. In His eyes, I am His Masterpiece!

Let’s break free from the chains of expectations and perceptions the world wraps around us. Give Harry Potter back his cloak! God crafted each of us with divine purpose and love. Embrace your identity as His masterpiece and get busy doing the things He wants you to do. You are seen, heard, and valued beyond measure!
