Deuteronomy 19-22; Psalm 6; Luke 10

by Becky Hill Martin

But the Lord said to her, “My dear Martha, you are worried and upset over all these details! There is only one thing worth being concerned about. Mary has discovered it, and it will not be taken away from her.” – Luke 10:41-42

Let’s unpack the iconic moment when Jesus visited Martha and Mary’s home. Mary chose to sit at the feet of Jesus, soaking in every word He spoke. She prioritized her spiritual growth and relationship with Him above all else. But Martha, Martha, Martha… she got caught up in the hustle and bustle of preparing a lavish dinner. Her intentions were good. But she let herself get overwhelmed and distracted by her to-do list.

What’s the lesson here? It’s all about balance. Sure, adulting comes with a hefty dose of responsibilities, but we can’t let them run us ragged to the point where our soul care takes a back seat. Instead of being consumed by the pressures of perfectionism like Martha, let’s take a cue from Mary and prioritize what truly matters – our connection with Jesus and nurturing our souls. Remember, it’s not about the quantity of our tasks, but the quality of our presence with the One who matters most.
