Esther 1-3; Psalm 139; Revelation 1

by Becky Hill Martin

Psalm 139:1
O Lord, you have examined my heart and know everything about me.

Why is it so hard to get someone the perfect Christmas gift? Even if you know someone like the back of your hand – your parent, your child or a significant other – there’s still so much pressure to gift the perfect gift. I mean – what if they don’t like it? What if it’s not the right color/size/model? What’s the return policy? What if I can’t wrap the present in pretty paper with perfectly aligned folds? What if I can’t find a big enough gift bag that doesn’t look like GLAD made it? It’s easy to lose sight of the reason for the season when we’re so concerned about finding the perfect gift.

Christ wasn’t wrapped in beautiful paper or stuffed into a bag with 5 pounds of tissue paper and a big red bow. He wasn’t stuck underneath a Christmas tree with 3000 twinkle lights. He was more like that present wrapped in newspaper and twine found under a Charlie Brown twig tree.

God knows us so well that He allowed Jesus to wrap Himself in humility and in humanity to save us from sin. No other gift can compete, and there’s no way anyone would march that one back to the return register.
