Isaiah 11-13; Psalm 118; Matthew 27
5 In my distress I prayed to the Lord,
and the Lord answered me and set me free.
6 The Lord is for me, so I will have no fear.
What can mere people do to me?
7 Yes, the Lord is for me; he will help me.
I will look in triumph at those who hate me.
8 It is better to take refuge in the Lord
than to trust in people.
9 It is better to take refuge in the Lord
than to trust in princes. (Psalm 118.5-9)
This Psalm opens with “Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good! His faithful love endures forever.”
I don’t have the space in today’s commentary to go into this to the fullness of how I would like. What I will do is have us turn our attention to how this Psalm tells us what to do, and then “why.” Give thanks to GOD, for HE is good, HIS faithful love endures forever. Surely if you have not experienced this “why” behind the “what” of giving GOD thanks, the psalmist gives us reasons.
The psalmist begins to testify of “why” we should thank the LORD. No matter what happened to him, the psalmist has found help in hope in GOD. Maybe you going through right now, and giving thanks isn’t at the top of your life menu. It is better to take refuge in the LORD than trust in people.
I honestly don’t know what you are facing. What is facing you. How you are hurting right now. How others around you are hurting that you love. Yet, I desire you to give thanks to the LORD, for HE is good! HIS faithful love endures forever!
