2 Kings 9-10; Psalm 49; Matthew 7

Why should I fear when trouble comes,
    when enemies surround me?
They trust in their wealth
    and boast of great riches.
Yet they cannot redeem themselves from death
by paying a ransom to God. (Psalm 49.5-7)

Only JESUS can redeem us. For He is the way, the truth and the life. I remember growing up and I would get a couple of dollars. I would bug my Mom to no end to go to the store. She would say, “boy, that money gone burn a whole in your pocket!”

I had no idea what that had to do with her keys being put in the car’s ignition so we could go to the store. Yet, I now know what she meant. That money was so hot to me, so vital, it was like a flame in my pocket that I had to put out by spending it on Sugar Daddy caramels or Pez hard candy.

What is not sweet is thinking our money can purchase our salvation from sin and hell. Our salvation is found in CHRIST alone. Money has its place, but we must not let it hold a place it should not. In GOD we trust.

A careful way to keep money in its place is to remember our Father knows what we need, and we must A.S.K. (ask, seek, knock). Let Matthew 7 remind us of our need to go to the Father in heaven and not the money of man.
