1 Kings 2; 1 Chronicles 29; Romans 7
2 “I am going where everyone on earth must someday go. Take courage and be a man. 3 Observe the requirements of the Lord your God, and follow all his ways. Keep the decrees, commands, regulations, and laws written in the Law of Moses so that you will be successful in all you do and wherever you go. 4 If you do this, then the Lord will keep the promise he made to me. He told me, ‘If your descendants live as they should and follow me faithfully with all their heart and soul, one of them will always sit on the throne of Israel.’ (1 Kings 2:2-4)
As a Dad, when I read this I can see myself in both roles. As David, a father who is directing his son and as Solomon, one who is receiving fatherly direction.
What is the advice?
To be a man and have courage as he observes the requirements of GOD. A tall order for sure, but Solomon was never meant to do this in isolation from GOD. In our efforts to do anything “for” GOD, we must always remember this means total dependance on GOD to get it done. We must remember that our obedience will proceed our blessing. Disobedience will lead us to our own destruction.
LORD, grant us the humility and maturity to listen and learn and live our lives in accordance with You and Your word. The struggles that are revealed in doing such mustn’t stop us, but show us our frailty and our continuous need for You. We know You are a promise keeping GOD, help us to follow You faithfully with all our hearts and souls…Amen.
