Proverbs 22-23; Psalm 117; 1 Thessalonians 1

by Faith Brady

If Solomon had 700 wives and 300 concubines as 1 Kings 11:3 tells us, then how many children did he have?  The Bible only mentions 3.  His son, Rehoboam, had 28 sons and 60 daughters.  Therefore, when we read parenting advice from Solomon, remember he has been there and done that.  Proverbs 22:6 is a verse many parents quote many times after their children leave home, “Train up a child in the way he should go;even when he is old he will not depart from it.”

As a parent of adult children I can attest to this.  However, as parents of young children, training them is the hardest job you will ever have.  You are not going to do everything correctly.  One thing I appreciate about my upbringing in a godly home is the discipline I was given.  My parents believed in verse 16 of chapter 22 (just ask my brother…😉) “Folly is bound up in the heart of a child, but the rod of discipline drives it far from him.”  And 13 & 14 of chapter 23 “Do not withhold discipline from a child; if you strike him with a rod, he will not die.

If you strike him with the rod, you will save his soul from Sheol.”  Discipline is not always physical punishment.  It is sometimes giving the child consequences that match their actions.  If they make a mess, don’t clean it up for them.  If they don’t eat what you cook, don’t become a short order cook.  Children that are undisciplined at home become adults that expect the world to cater to them and excuse their bad behavior.  I work with several of these kind of “adult children”.  23:15 “My son, if your heart is wise, my heart too will be glad.” 23:19 “Hear, my son, and be wise, and direct your heart in the way.”  We have already spoken about how wisdom comes from experience, and that the heart is a vital aspect of our relationship with God.  So these verses lead us to lead our children to have a relationship with God that lasts a lifetime.  Psalm 117 is just icing on the cake 🎂!

Praise the Lord, all nations!
Extol him, all peoples!
For great is his steadfast love toward us, and the faithfulness of the Lord endures forever.
Praise the Lord!
